Toy knives no longer sold at NM State Fair

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – People are not allowed to bring knives to the New Mexico State Fair, but KOB 4 discovered knives were being sold inside one of the exhibit halls.

However, fair officials say the knives, seen on cell phone video, are actually toys, made of heavy-duty plastic.

“It’s a plastic toy first of all and we understand that it’s a toy but if the people, if the public doesn’t believe that’s a toy perception is reality,” said the General Manager of the New Mexico State Fair and Expo New Mexico Dan Mourning. “We’ve asked that vendor to remove those items for sale. Even though it’s a toy, it does look a little realistic.”

As of Monday afternoon, the knives were no longer on sale at the New Mexico State Fair.

Mourning said vendors are required to submit a list of what they are selling. They believe the knives were either not described properly or were not listed.

Mourning wants to assure attendees that the fair is one of the safest places in the city. Officials said in addition to officers in uniforms, there are also undercover operations to make sure people remain safe.
